At FFD Commercial Refrigeration we understand the importance of following best practice both from a customer perspective, ensuring that businesses always find the best chiller or freezer for their needs and also with regards to our responsibility to the environment as a refrigeration supplier. As a Refcom Elite Supplier we commit to raising awareness of responsible refrigerant handling, helping to ensure F-Gas Regulations are adhered to by fully qualified commercial refrigeration engineers.

Working with Commercial Refrigerants

Refrigerants used in commercial fridges and freezers as well as air conditioning and cellar cooling units, have long been recognised as having a harmful effect on the environment when mishandled during equipment installation and servicing and when leaks occur.

While CFC's, known to be harmful to the ozone layer, HCFC's and HFC's have been used for commercial refrigeration previously and subsequently phased out in search of a more environmentally friendly solutions, corresponding regulations and legislations have been modified and updated to reflect the changing potential hazards.

Commercial refrigeration now uses HC's (Hydrocarbons) such as R290 and R600a which while being greener for the environment in the case of leaks, are toxic and highly flammable and must therefore be heavily regulated. As such, HC refrigerants must be handled, worked with, contained and disposed of correctly in order to limit accident or danger.

To comply with legislation, all engineers who work with Hydrocarbon gases must obtain an F-Gas (fluorinated gases) certificate qualifying them to handle these gases legally. Engineers that undertake work without the correct qualifications or certification are liable to prosecution.
