Refcom* estimate that "thousands of tonnes of CO₂ equivalent in refrigerant gas is lost to atmosphere every year". By using F Gas registered engineers, this figure can be drastically reduced. Unfortunately there are still many engineers being employed to actively work on refrigeration systems that do not have the mandatory qualifications in line with F Gas Regulations.

Refcom is dedicated to educating the industry and helping it to become a more informed and environmentally responsible sector.

Who Are Refcom and What Do They Do?

Refcom are a highly regarded and well established organisation founded in 1996 that began with the purpose of encouraging refrigeration engineers and suppliers to follow industry best practices and to highlight environmental issues caused through mishandling of refrigerant gases. Refcom continue to ensure that compliance with all relevant legislation when it comes to responsible refrigerant management, is a firm priority for businesses.

In light of their commitment and dedication to raising awareness of best practice in refrigerant management, 2009 saw the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) award Refcom with the position of certification body for F-Gas Regulations. This has led to REFCOM becoming the UK's market leading F-Gas Certification scheme, where engineers can apply for or renew their F-Gas certificates and can also be listed on the F-Gas Register. This register allows other businesses to search the public database for high quality, qualified contractors to carry out work and view their credentials.

As a voluntary scheme, engineers and refrigeration businesses are not obligated to sign-up. Refcom however, continue their work to raise awareness and emphasise the importance of responsible refrigerant handling and compliance with regulations across the industry.

What is F-Gas Certification?

It is a legal requirement for any engineer that recovers, handles, installs, services or maintains any equipment that uses HFC's or HC's to have Fgas certification and have obtained the necessary F-Gas qualifications.

An FGas certification demonstrates that engineers have undergone training and have achieved the necessary qualifications to ensure they are able to operate in line with the legal requirements required to work with F gases (or fluorinated greenhouse gases).

REFCOM offer details of all the relevant qualifications that are required to gain an F-Gas certificate on their website including information about booking courses and upcoming changes to legislation that may affect FGas certification or require additional qualifications.

FGas Company Certificates are available for businesses that employ FGas qualified engineers and are therefore complying with F-Gas regulations and legislation. Companies can also be searched for on the Fgas register.

What is Refcom Elite?

The REFCOM Elite scheme offers a more comprehensive approach to F-Gas requirements with additional guidelines and standards in place to limit the volume of refrigerant gas released into the atmosphere during installation, servicing and maintenance procedures.

What is a REFCOM Elite Supplier?

The Refcom Elite Supplier scheme was created to help the industry to enforce Fgas Regulations in regards to supplier rules. This is a voluntary scheme that suppliers of split system or remote refrigeration can register for. It creates a code of conduct that ensures suppliers are fully aware of their obligations and that processes are accurately followed, not only for the benefit of the industry but, importantly, the environment.

As a Refcom Elite Supplier, we recognise the importance of responsible supply of refrigerated equipment and also the importance of using only F Gas registered engineers. We voluntarily commit to meeting all guidelines laid out REFCOM and to observing a code of conduct to better enforce F-Gas Regulations.
