Commercial Refrigeration Sales Policy

Last Updated: 21st Mar 2024

It has been a legal requirement since July 2009 for all businesses that sell, install, maintain or service stationary refrigeration equipment containing or designed to contain f-gas refrigerants to obtain an FGas Company Certificate.

FFD is dedicated to providing a high quality service to each and every one of our customers whilst adhering to UK/EU legislation and government guidelines. This sales policy covers information including who we sell to, the technical details supplied for advertised products and any stipulations that may affect the supply of certain types of refrigeration equipment.

FFD are a certified REFCOM Elite Supplier – as a refrigeration distributor, this means we are certified and are regularly assessed to ensure we adhere to a voluntary code of conduct designed to regulate the supply chain and better enforce the F-Gas Regulations.

FFD, as a REFCOM Elite Supplier will only sell split systems (pre-charged or otherwise) to our clients where evidence has been provided and verified of who will be installing the equipment and that the installer/company in question have valid FGas certification.

The commercial refrigeration available on our site can be broadly split into two types: 'plug and play' and 'split system' refrigeration.

Plug & Play Refrigeration (Integral)

This comprises the majority of commercial equipment available on our site and is typified by the presence of a fused plug or hardwired electrical connection. All equipment has integral refrigeration system/s and does not require specialist gas engineers for installation.

Split System Refrigeration (Remote)

Split systems comprise a remote refrigeration portion (the condenser) where the condensing unit is situated remotely from the main cabinet, typically on an exterior wall whilst the other portion (the evaporator) is installed within the “cabinet”. The most common types of split system or remote refrigeration are; cold rooms, freezer rooms, multidecks, air conditioning systems and cellar cooling.

The type of refrigeration a product falls into will determine the information and details we require before we can authorise the sale.

Types of Refrigeration & Who We Supply

Can I buy & install split system refrigeration?

  • FFD must arrange for the installation of equipment by a 3rd party company that is FGas registered and meets strict criteria.

alternatively

  • If the customer wishes to arrange installation of remote split system equipment, FFD require full FGas registry details of the proposed installation company and/or the engineer designated to carry out the work. A sale will not be confirmed & despatched until full information is submitted and verified on the order.

Product Information and Energy Labelling

FFD supply a broad range of chillers & freezers from a wide source of commercial refrigeration manufacturers. Our aim is to pass on all information and specifications that we have available to our customers ensuring that they have all of the essential technical details necessary to make a fully informed choice when purchasing equipment.

Another important aspect of commercial refrigeration is the requirement for cabinets to meet certain energy performance standards as laid out and regulated by the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL). These regulations establish minimum energy performance standards for commercial refrigeration products, and require that products meet these standards in order to be sold in the UK & EU.

Energy ratings provide consumers with information about the energy efficiency of a particular refrigeration unit, which can help them choose products that are more energy efficient and cost-effective to operate. Read more about EPREL or MEPS (Minimum Energy Performance Standards).

Our Refcom Elite Supplier Pledge to Observe Refrigerant Safety

Refrigerants have progressed greatly over the years from the phasing out of commonly used CFC's and the banning of HCFC's that were found to be a factor in ozone depletion and in later years, HFC's such as R134a that have proven to contribute to climate change.

New refrigerants used in domestic and commercial equipment are heavily regulated due to the toxic and flammable properties. The relatively recent introduction of Hydrocarbon's (HC's) such as R290 - a propane more commonly seen in the commercial sector, and R600a - an isobutane often used in domestic appliances, has called for strict regulations surrounding working with these refrigerants. As such, these refrigerants must be handled, worked with, contained and disposed of correctly in order to limit accident or danger.

Thousands of tonnes of CO2 equivalent in refrigerant gas are lost to the atmosphere each and every year due to un-certificated and non-professional installations. Refrigerants should only be handled and worked with by FGas registered engineers who undergo stringent testing and ongoing certification to observe the highest levels of safety.

To ensure that this remains the case FFD, as a REFCOM Elite Supplier, commits to only selling split system refrigeration to businesses where installation by an FGas registered engineer is arranged by ourselves or the customer who can supply proof that an FGas registered company or engineer is being employed on their behalf.
